Dealing with the Steam
In a bathroom, condensation is the real villain. It doesn’t just sit there; it finds every tiny gap and settles right on the live terminals. To stop that, we use silicone gaskets and sealed cable glands. Think of it as weather-proofing for your electronics. If those seals slip up, moisture hits the terminals and—boom—you’ve got a ground fault. Not a great way to start your morning.
Making Sure It’s Actually Insulated

The infrared lamps themselves are tucked inside quartz glass, which is great because it doesn’t conduct electricity. But the connection points—where the wires actually meet the lamp—are the tricky part. That’s where things usually go wrong. To fix that, we use heat-resistant ceramic insulators and reinforced potting compounds. It stops “tracking,” which is just a fancy way of saying it prevents moisture from creating a little electric bridge across the insulator.
The Trade-offs (Because Nothing is Perfect)
Here’s the thing: when you seal a unit tight to keep water out, it can’t breathe. Because it’s airtight, the internal electronics get a lot hotter than they would in, say, an outdoor patio heater. You just have to make sure whatever surface you’re mounting it to can handle that heat. Otherwise, the thermal cutout will trip, and your heater will just shut off right when you’re feeling coldest. One last tip: always wire this into a dedicated GFCI breaker. Even with the best IP55 seals in the world, rubber and silicone can degrade over time. The GFCI is your safety net. It’s there to save your skin if a seal eventually fails.
