Most people think those infrared lamps in the bathroom are just there to keep you from shivering when you step out of the shower. And sure, they’re great for that. But there’s a much bigger reason to use them:killing the conditions that mold loves. Here is how it actually works. Mold needs two things to move in and take over your bathroom: damp air and cold walls. When your walls are chilly, steam turns into water droplets the second it hits the tile. That’s where the trouble starts. But infrared is different. Instead of just heating up the air—which usually just floats away—these lamps shoot energy straight into the walls and tiles. It warms the actual surface of the room. When your walls stay warm, the water can’t condense. No drips, no damp spots, and no food for mold spores. Simple as that. To get this right, we use halogen-filled quartz tubes. Why? Because they can handle much higher heat without the glass getting cloudy. This gives us a sharper, faster kind of heat that dries your surfaces out in a snap. There is a bit of a balancing act here, though. If you go with a massive wattage lamp in a tiny room, you might end up with “hot spots” that feel like a tanning bed if the lamp is mounted too low. You’ve got to get the distance and the angle just right so the heat spreads evenly across the whole room. We usually tuck these into the ceiling. It just makes sense—any leftover heat rises, and you get the best coverage. The best part? You don’t have to keep your loud exhaust fan running for an hour after every single shower.
