
Keeping Your Bathroom IR Heaters From Shorting Out
Putting infrared lamps in a bathroom is basically like picking a fight with steam and moisture. And as anyone who’s ever flipped a breaker knows: water and electricity don’t get along. If your insulation slips up, you’re looking at a ground fault or a nasty short circuit. To keep things safe, we really only have to worry about two things: the barriers and the seals.
Dealing with Damp Air
Here’s the thing about humidity—it makes air a lot less effective at stopping electricity from jumping where it shouldn’t. To fix this, we use high-purity quartz envelopes. Think of it as a sturdy glass shield between the tungsten filament and the rest of the heater. But the glass has to be perfect. No micro-cracks. Not even a tiny one. If there’s a fissure, moisture seeps in and creates “tracking.” That’s just a fancy way of saying the electricity starts crawling across the surface of the insulator. It’s why we test these tubes for leakage current. Nobody wants their GFCI breaker tripping every time they take a hot shower.
The Weakest Link: Connectors
The spot where the wire actually meets the lamp is usually where things go south. Most of these heaters use R7s or spring-loaded connectors, which are fine, but they need help. We use silicone potting or heat-shrink sleeves to seal the joint. Why? Because of “wicking.” Moisture can actually travel inside the wire insulation, creeping right up into the lamp base. If you skip the seal, the terminals oxidize. Then the resistance climbs, the joint gets scorching hot, and eventually, the connector just burns out. It’s a slow burn, but it always happens.
The Reality of High Wattage
Shortwave lamps are great because they give you that instant blast of heat. But they’re demanding. You can’t just shove a 1000W lamp into some cheap, plastic-heavy fixture. You need a housing that can actually breathe and move that heat away. If the thermal management is garbage, the wire jackets will get brittle and crack. At that point, it doesn’t matter how fancy your lamp is—your insulation is toast. Stick with high-temp rated leads. It’s a small detail, but it’s the difference between a heater that lasts years and one that becomes a fire hazard.
