
Keeping Your Cleanroom Actually Clean: The Truth About Infrared Heating
If you’re running a Class 100 cleanroom, you already know the nightmare of particulate shedding. One tiny speck of dust or a bit of outgassing, and your whole batch of wafers is toast. The problem is that most standard heating elements just aren’t built for this. They tend to flake off microscopic debris as they heat up and cool down. It’s a constant battle. We figured out a better way. We use high-purity quartz tubes with a gold-coated reflective layer. Simple, but it works.
Why Gold?
Here is the thing about standard quartz lamps: they throw heat in every direction. It’s wasteful. By adding a thin film of gold to the back of the tube, we push all that infrared energy forward. You basically double the heat hitting your substrate. We use gold because it’s the best at reflecting infrared, and unlike other materials, it doesn’t oxidize when things get hot. And we don’t just use any glass. We use high-purity synthetic quartz. This means when you ramp up the heat, you don’t have to worry about random ions migrating from the tube onto your silicon. It stays clean.
Speed, Heat, and the Catch
These lamps are built for rapid thermal processing. Because the gold concentrates the energy, the heat footprint is much tighter. You hit your target temperatures faster, which means your wafers spend less time under stress. But a word of caution: watch your power density. When you push these lamps to their absolute limit, the end caps and seals really feel it. I always tell people to keep a close eye on their vacuum seals and cooling lines. You don’t want thermal stress to crack your quartz in the middle of a run.
Making It Work in Your Line
We designed these to be drop-in replacements. No need to rebuild your entire toolset. One of the best parts? You can ditch those bulky external reflectors. Those things are dust magnets and a pain to clean. Since the reflection is built right into the tube, there are fewer parts in your chamber. Fewer parts means a faster cleaning cycle. And a faster cleaning cycle means your particle count stays exactly where it needs to be.
